Having traveled the world extensively over decades, I have witnessed an erosion, a fading of traditional cultural dress, norms and values. This shift is shaped by many forces including globalisation, displacement caused by war and the climate crisis, missionary influence, western fast fashion, tourism and more recently the internet and social media.

This “Fading Away” series reflects on these transformations. In this body of work, I draw on the Samburu people of Northern Kenya, inspired by photographs I took while attending weddings and ceremonial gatherings.

The Samburu have preserved their cultural identity with more resilience than many other ethnic groups in Kenya. Yet even within their communities there are visible signs that deeply rooted traditions are beginning to soften and fade.
